What You’ll Need to Clean Your Water Cooler

Before beginning the cleaning process, make sure you have the following items:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Bleach
  • A bucket that can hold one or two gallons of water
  • A sponge

The Water Cooler Cleaning Process

Though cleaning a water cooler is a simple process, these tips will assure that you get the job does well:

  1. Unplug: Before beginning the cleaning process, unplug the cooler from the electrical outlet.
  2. Prepare the Disinfecting Solution: Add one tablespoon of bleach to a gallon of water. This is the cleaning solution you’ll use to scrub the inside of the bottle with.
  3. Remove the Bottle: After making sure the bottle is completely or close to empty, remove it from its base carefully.
  4. Scrub: Pour the disinfecting solution into the bottle and scrub the interior with a sponge. Let it stand for at least two minutes, but for no longer than five minutes.
  5. Drain: Drain the solution from the bottle either into a bucket or the faucet.
  6. Rinse: Rinse the bottle thoroughly with clean tap water or bottled water. We recommend doing this at least four times to be safe.
  7. Refill: After washing your hands, wait about five minutes before drinking from and handling a fresh bottle of water.

Water Cooler Cleaning Safety Tips

When cleaning your cooler, make sure your hands are clean throughout the process. Wash your hands before and after cleaning.

Wearing disposable gloves and safety goggles is also recommended when handling bleach. Even after removing gloves, you should still wash your hands as an extra precaution.

How Often Should I Clean My Water Cooler?

As stated briefly earlier, you should aim to clean your water cooler once or twice every year at the very least. If you notice it getting dirty and requiring more immediate attention, cleaning it every three months never hurts.
